So I'm watching Diane Sawyer reporting from Beijing... there's a whole slew of interesting topics covered including the valuation of the RMB, the creation of jobs (or lack thereof depending on how you look at it) that came with the Chinese consumer boom, but of course the part that really caught my interest was when Diane sampled the McDonald's taro pie.
She introduced the snack saying that they carried these in China as an alternative to the classic apple pie, and then she took a bite, made a face, and said she would reserve comment for later...
We all know it's not gourmet, it's a fast food pastry treat. It tastes like sugar and goo inside bread. If you can ignore what it does to your body and you're looking for a sugar buzz, you might even say it's downright tasty.
I just thought her reaction was interesting. You could take that clip, and instead of the taro pie, insert scorpions on a stick or pig feet or something else that traditionally elicits that sort of response and then I think I wouldn't have found it so odd. (for the record, I have tried all three, and they sell taro pies in hawaii mcdonalds too). Oh Diane Sawyer...
